Carefully Coördinated Unison Movements

In Sevilla I attended the preparations for the Semana Santa celebrations. They are known for a week of Easter processions with allegorical floats of biblical scenes composed of wooden sculptures moving through the streets. Weeks in advance I witnessed how groups of men from different neighbourhoods practise their drill and carry the adorned cart. Their bodily movements, stops and turns in unison with the music are carefully coördinated by foremen through verbal instructions and a metal knocker. Their community sense is strongly embodied in this manner. This was best exemplified at a specific moment during the procession…

During one procession the foreman halted the float with the men and made them salute a handicapped girl from the parish. She had waited for hours in the crowd and this respectful gesture thrilled her visibly. Her immense joy moved me and others in the crowd.
